From the very beginning, the novel impressed me with its beautifully descriptive prose. The translator deserves immense praise for capturing the author's lyrical writing style. The world unfolds like a watercolor painting, rich with detail and emotion. I was immediately drawn to Chu Yu, the MC, a character described as breathtakingly beautiful, intelligent, and proud. His sharp wit and seemingly cold exterior hide a deep well of unrequited love for Qin Zheng, the ML.

What Works Well

The strength of this novel lies in its character development, especially in the second half. While Qin Zheng starts as a frustratingly weak and indecisive character, his eventual growth and pursuit of Chu Yu are undeniably compelling. The angst is delicious, and the story excels at portraying the characters' grief and their journey toward each other. The author masterfully weaves a tale of complex family relationships and political machinations. The ending, while perhaps not perfect, is satisfying in its own way, offering a glimpse of hard-earned happiness.

Qin Zheng's actions, particularly his relationship with his former lover, Meng Hanyi, are difficult to stomach. Meng Hanyi is responsible for causing Chu Yu's miscarriage and attempting to murder him, and that is never properly addressed. The level of abuse the MC experiences is extreme. While I appreciate angst, the ML's initial behavior and lack of proper groveling left me feeling unsatisfied.

Final Verdict

"Zhao Qin Mu Chu" is a novel that will stay with me for a while. It's beautifully written and emotionally charged, but it's also flawed. If you're a fan of angsty danmei with complex characters and a compelling plot, this might be for you.
