My Thoughts on Yayoi Can’t Hide Her Secrets
I jumped into "Yayoi Can’t Hide Her Secrets" expecting a rom-com with a bit of spy-thriller flair, a blend I was really excited to explore. The premise of a secret agent struggling to keep her feelings (and secrets!) under wraps sounded like a recipe for hilarious and heartwarming chaos. While the "heartwarming" part definitely landed, the "agent" aspect felt a little…underdeveloped.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely hooked me. Yayoi's character is immediately likeable, and the male lead is relatable enough. The slice-of-life elements are well-written, drawing you into their everyday world. However, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing, a certain "oomph" that the synopsis promised.
What Works Well
The core of the novel, the budding romance between Yayoi and the male lead, is genuinely sweet. Their interactions are believable, and I found myself rooting for them. The "conditional power" aspect, while intriguing, didn't feel fully explored, adding to the feeling that the supernatural elements were more of a backdrop than an integral part of the story. The story felt like it was baiting me with the expectation of something special, only to switch it right as I finished the prologue.
