Description
My homeroom teacher, Sakuramiya-sensei, had a situation that required her to get married before she turned 30. However, even though she is about to turn 30, she does not have a boyfriend, let alone a fiancé. At this rate, she would be forced into an arranged marriage, and she will have to marry someone she does not like. As a desperate measure, Sakuramiya-sensei decides to introduce me, Minato Segawa, to her parents as her boyfriend. I have about 10 months until I turn 18, the age when I can get married. During that time, I will help her to look for a possible fiancé candidate. However, when I met with Sensei’s mother as a pretend Fiancé she ended up liking me… and things started to get worse and worse.

When I Asked My Sensei Who Was in Her Thirties to Let Me Take Responsibility for My Actions, She Brought Me a Marriage Registration~ Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator
My Thoughts on When I Asked My Sensei Who Was in Her Thirties to Let Me Take Responsibility for My Actions, She Brought Me a Marriage Registration~
This title alone had me hooked! The premise is undeniably intriguing: a student asking his older teacher to take responsibility, only to be met with a marriage registration. The initial setup promises a comedic and potentially heartwarming story, and for a while, it delivers on that promise. It's a fun ride with expressive characters that I quickly found myself invested in.
First Impressions
The early chapters are undeniably charming. The "pretend engagement" trope is one I often enjoy, and the female lead starts off as a sweet and somewhat naive character. This dynamic creates a lot of potential for both humor and genuine connection, which the author initially taps into quite well. I went in expecting fluff and found myself pleasantly surprised by the initial depth of the characters.
What Works Well
The characters are definitely a strong point. They have a certain charm, and the initial interactions between the student and teacher are well-written and engaging. The author does a good job of establishing the premise and setting the stage for the relationship to develop. There is also a good amount of funny moments that made me laugh while reading, which helped me want to continue reading.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the story seems to stumble a bit as it progresses. The drama, while initially adding some depth, apparently ramps up considerably. It seems to get to a point where it becomes overwhelming, and the constant misunderstandings and love-quadrangle shenanigans become mentally taxing. I can see how this could detract from the overall enjoyment, especially if you're looking for a lighthearted read. The male lead's character is also a point of concern. He apparently suffers from a severe lack of backbone, making it difficult to root for him. An indecisive protagonist can be frustrating, especially when they seem incapable of asserting themselves.
Final Verdict
"When I Asked My Sensei..." has an undeniably captivating premise and a promising start. However, the excessive drama and the protagonist's shortcomings seem to weigh the story down in the later chapters. While the expressive characters and engaging concept are definite strengths, potential readers should be aware that the story takes a turn towards heavier, more taxing themes. If you enjoy a good dose of drama and don't mind a somewhat spineless protagonist, this might be worth a try. However, if you're looking for a light and fluffy read, you might want to proceed with caution.
