My Thoughts on Weapon Master

I recently dove into the world of "Weapon Master," a xuanhuan novel focusing on, you guessed it, weapon forging. With its completed original run and ongoing translation, I was eager to see what this story had to offer. Overall, I found it to be an enjoyable, albeit flawed, read.

First Impressions

The premise is definitely appealing: a protagonist dedicated to weapon refining in a world of martial arts and cultivation. It's a nice change from the "jack-of-all-trades" MCs you often find in this genre. I was quickly drawn in by the initial world-building and the promise of a focused narrative. The early chapters were easy to get into, and I appreciated the protagonist's straightforward, if slightly cynical, personality.

What Works Well

The main draw for me was the MC's dedication to his craft. He's tenacious and sincere, and I enjoyed watching him grow and overcome challenges through his forging skills. The story and cultivation system are well constructed. I also found the female characters to be reasonably well-developed, and the small spiritual beast "Yiya" added a touch of charm. The novel delivers on its promise of being a classic xianxia guilty pleasure with a blacksmithing twist. It's a decent read if you're looking for something familiar and engaging within the genre.

Areas of Concern

Unfortunately, "Weapon Master" does have some significant drawbacks, primarily stemming from the translation quality. The translation is inconsistent, and the repeating words and phrases can get repetitive and annoying. There are numerous pronoun errors, inconsistent names, and lines that are simply difficult to understand. This really detracted from my overall enjoyment and made it harder to fully immerse myself in the story. Additionally, while the harem aspect is present, it felt somewhat underdeveloped and rushed. Some plot points, like the MC's missing mother, seem to be forgotten as the story progresses. The world-building, while decent, also feels a bit simplistic and could have been explored in greater depth.

Final Verdict

Despite its flaws, "Weapon Master" is still a worthwhile read if you're a fan of xianxia novels and are willing to overlook the translation issues. The engaging protagonist, focus on weapon forging, and familiar tropes make it an enjoyable experience. Just be prepared for some frustrating moments along the way. I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
