We Should Have Slept While Only Holding Hands, And Yet?!

Description
My childhood friend who lived next door since preschool, Ja Saeyeon. On the outside, she appears like an adequately pretty girl who’s like a drawing, but only her body has grown; she was a girl whose mental age was truly that of an elementary schooler. We’d spend time together from time to time, but Saeyeon’s parents, who were often not home, would pay me to take care of her, so we merely had a ‘work’ relationship. But this time her spoiled behavior was more severe for some reason. She fretfully asked for me to sleep together with her since she was too scared to sleep by herself. I even sang her a lullaby, but she thought that I was going to run away so, with great care, she asked if we could sleep while holding hands. We then slept together. Really, seriously, we merely slept while only holding hands. But the next morning⎯⎯⎯there was a young girl lying down between us?!

My Thoughts on We Should Have Slept While Only Holding Hands, And Yet?!
"We Should Have Slept While Only Holding Hands, And Yet?!" is a title that grabbed my attention, and after diving in, I can see why it's garnered such a dedicated following. It's a wild ride that blends comedy, romance, and surprisingly heavy psychological drama, with a dash of sci-fi thrown in for good measure.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a bit thrown off. The story starts with a rather cynical male protagonist who, to put it mildly, isn't the most likeable guy. He wakes up one morning to find his childhood friend and a little girl claiming to be their daughter from the future in his bed. The daughter insists she's there to fix their broken marriage, which in the future has resulted in a divorce. It’s a bizarre setup, and honestly, I wasn't sure where it was going.
What Works Well
The character development is a major strength. The MC's initial unpleasantness is gradually explained through his past, making him a more understandable, if not always sympathetic, character. I particularly enjoyed the complex relationship between the MC and his "daughter" from the future. Their interactions are well-written and genuinely touching. The female lead is also a standout, and her suffering is surprisingly impactful.
What truly elevates this novel is the plot twist in Volume 3. It takes the story from a quirky rom-com to a deeply emotional drama, exploring themes of broken families, regret, and the potential consequences of altering the past. I found myself completely invested in the characters' struggles and desperate to see them find a resolution. The world-building, while subtle at first, is also cleverly done, with details slowly revealed to create a complex and believable setting. The excellent translation is a real plus, making the complexities of the story accessible and enjoyable.
Areas of Concern
Some readers might find the initial volumes slow or frustrating, especially if they're expecting a lighthearted rom-com. The MC's initial attitude can be off-putting, and it takes time to understand the reasons behind his behavior. Also, the long chapters might not be for everyone.

Final Verdict
Despite some initial reservations, "We Should Have Slept While Only Holding Hands, And Yet?!" has won me over. It's a unique and emotionally resonant story with well-developed characters and a compelling plot. If you're willing to stick with it through the initial volumes and embrace the shift in tone, you'll be rewarded with a truly unforgettable reading experience. I'm giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Be prepared for an emotional rollercoaster!
