Description

"Untypical Divorce" is a completed josei web novel that dives into the complexities of a modern-day marriage of convenience gone awry. I went in expecting a straightforward romance, but what I found was a story that sparked both frustration and intrigue. It's definitely not a light and fluffy read, so be prepared for some emotional turbulence.
First Impressions
Initially, I was on the fence. The female lead, initially portrayed as a strong and independent woman, seemed to make some questionable decisions, particularly concerning her feelings for the male lead. I felt her motivations weren't always clear, which made it hard to connect with her at first. It's a rough start, and I almost dropped it.
What Works Well
Despite my initial reservations, I found myself drawn to the novel's exploration of imperfect characters and their messy relationship. The author doesn't shy away from portraying a toxic dynamic, which, while sometimes exhausting, ultimately felt more realistic. The male lead is far from perfect, perhaps even unlikeable at times. He is flawed, carrying the weight of childhood trauma that manifests as coldness and insensitivity. However, there were glimmers of vulnerability that intrigued me. This novel shines in depicting a realistic marriage life, with all its ups and downs, arguments and suspicions. This is a story about flawed people trying to make something work, even when the odds are stacked against them.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the initial characterization of the male lead. His behavior can border on abusive, which made it difficult for me to root for the relationship at times. While his background offers some explanation, it doesn't excuse his actions. I can see why some readers would find him irredeemable.

"Untypical Divorce" is a challenging but ultimately rewarding read. If you're looking for a fluffy romance, this isn't it. However, if you're willing to delve into a story about flawed characters, toxic relationships, and the difficult path to growth, then this might be for you. The characters are multi-faceted, and the story rewards patience. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
