"Traveling To The Last Days To Protect You" promised a thrilling blend of zombie apocalypse, romance, and time travel, and while it delivered on some fronts, my overall experience was mixed. It’s a story with a lot of heart and some genuinely fun moments, but also some significant flaws that held it back from being truly great.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with their intriguing setup: a futuristic fan, Tantan, travels back to the beginning of the apocalypse to protect her idol, Ye Xiao. The premise is heartwarming and a bit sad, and I was excited to see how the story would unfold. The early interactions between Tantan and Ye Xiao were cute, and the base-building aspect felt promising.
What Works Well
Tantan is a unique main character. She is powerful, but not without her flaws. I appreciated that her selfless acts often stemmed from her own desires, making her feel more human. The romance between Tantan and Ye Xiao, while occasionally frustrating, was often sweet and supportive. I also enjoyed the initial focus on fighting zombies and building a new base. The story has its moments, and I think those who haven't read many novels with this particular mix of genres will find it more enjoyable than I did.
Areas of Concern
I felt the story started to lose its way around the three-quarter mark. The introduction of more supernatural elements, beyond the zombies, didn't quite mesh with the established world. The plot became convoluted, and I found myself skimming through certain sections. The ending felt rushed and crammed with too many twists. I also noticed that Tantan, while strong, could come across as a bit dense at times, which became frustrating.
