Okay, so I jumped into "This Wave of Zombies is No Good" with a healthy dose of skepticism, given the mixed buzz. A BL zombie apocalypse? It's either going to be amazing or a train wreck, right? After reading, I can safely say it's... somewhere in the middle, leaning towards the amazing side.
First Impressions
My initial reaction mirrored some of the concerns I saw going in. The beginning is definitely a bit jarring. You're thrown right into the thick of the zombie outbreak with minimal exposition. It feels like you've missed the first few chapters, leaving you scrambling to piece together the world and the characters' backstories.
What Works Well
Despite the rocky start, the story really finds its footing. The action sequences are well-written and engaging, painting a vivid picture of survival in a zombie-infested world. But what really sets this novel apart is its unique blend of genres. The comedy is genuinely funny, especially when it leans into the absurdity of the situation. I especially enjoyed the moments of levity amidst the chaos, like the whole zombie "meow" courting misunderstanding – pure gold!
The central relationship between Zhou Lang and Yu Jintang is complex and compelling. The power dynamic is interesting, especially with Yu Jintang being this OP zombie boss. The romance is definitely a slow burn, but it's worth the wait.
Areas of Concern
While the humor mostly lands, some of the early plot jumps and lack of background information can be off-putting. The pacing could definitely be tightened up in the beginning to give readers a stronger sense of the world and the characters' motivations.
