"Non-Human Seeking Re-employment" promised a unique blend of horror, comedy, and romance, and after diving in, I found it delivered... mostly. The premise, a powerful ghost king reincarnated as a human thrown into deadly games, certainly grabbed my attention. While the execution wasn't always perfect, there's an undeniable charm to this story.
First Impressions
The initial chapters are undeniably fun. The MC's nonchalant attitude towards the terrifying situations he finds himself in is genuinely hilarious. He's incredibly OP, which subverts the usual horror tropes, and I appreciated that. The dynamic between him and the ML, who is utterly devoted, is also quite endearing from the start.
What Works Well
The comedy is definitely a highlight. Many readers, myself included, enjoyed the humor derived from the MC's single-minded focus on food and his general lack of fear. The game system constantly "vomiting blood" because of the OP couple is a running gag that never fails to elicit a chuckle. The romance, while perhaps a bit fast-paced for some, is undeniably sweet. The ML's doting nature and willingness to cater to the MC's every whim create a fluffy and heartwarming dynamic. I also found the individual game instances to be creative and engaging, with a good variety of horror elements.
Areas of Concern
However, I can see why some readers found the story repetitive. The formula of "ghosts try to scare MC, MC isn't scared, MC and ML are OP" does get old after a while. The side characters could have been more developed. Some are reduced to caricatures, and their lack of depth makes it difficult to care about them. The MC's personality, while initially charming, can also become grating. His lack of initiative and seemingly childish mentality, despite being a thousand-year-old ghost, is a point of contention for several readers.
