My Thoughts on The Strongest Gene
"The Strongest Gene" is a web novel that I approached with a mix of curiosity and trepidation, given the mixed reception it seems to have garnered. It promised a blend of sci-fi, cultivation, and humor, a combination that can either be brilliantly executed or fall flat. After diving in, I can see both the appeal and the frustrations that readers have expressed.
First Impressions
The initial chapters are intriguing, setting up a world where genetic modification is the key to power and our protagonist, Chen Feng, possesses a unique "luck" ability. This Fate Stone cheat felt like a fresh take on the typical overpowered protagonist trope, and I was eager to see how the author would develop it.
What Works Well
The gene crafting system itself is quite compelling. The idea of leveling up by fusing and upgrading genes, progressing from F-rank to S-rank, offers a satisfying sense of progression. The comedic elements, especially the quirky side characters and absurd situations Chen Feng finds himself in, are definitely a highlight. I found myself chuckling at some of the more bizarre plot points, which helped to offset some of the weaker aspects of the story. The world-building, while flawed, does present a unique setting with its vast size and the potential for exploration.
Areas of Concern
However, "The Strongest Gene" does stumble in several areas. The "luck" ability, while initially interesting, often feels like a crutch for lazy writing. The author seems to forget the limitations of the ability, allowing Chen Feng to conveniently escape any situation with little consequence. This leads to a lack of tension and makes the plot feel predictable.
The plot armor is so thick that even a nuclear missile might not be able to destroy our MC The author keeps changing his mind about how much "luck value" the MC has every single chapter. One time he has 10 luck value and the next he has 500. FYI the the "luck value" regenerates by 1 every hour. MC goes from 0-500 in 3 days. To be honest he actually gets gets his luck value depending on the current plot rather then gaining 1 every hr.
Character development is also lacking. Chen Feng himself can come across as inconsistent, sometimes portrayed as clever and cautious, and other times as reckless and arrogant. The side characters are often one-dimensional and easily forgotten, serving little purpose beyond hyping up the protagonist. The villains, too, are often petty and lack any real depth, making their motivations feel weak.
Final Verdict
"The Strongest Gene" is a flawed but entertaining read. If you're looking for a novel with deep world-building, complex characters, and a meticulously crafted plot, you might be disappointed. However, if you're willing to turn off your brain, embrace the absurdity, and enjoy the ride, there's fun to be had. I'd recommend approaching this novel with low expectations and a healthy dose of humor. Overall, it's a 3/5 for me – enjoyable in parts, but ultimately held back by its numerous flaws.
