My Thoughts on The Demon’s Menu

"The Demon's Menu" is a web novel that certainly serves up an interesting premise, blending action, adventure, fantasy, and a dash of mystery. I went in expecting a unique experience, given the tags like "calm protagonist" and "game elements," but my journey through this story was a mixed bag.

First Impressions

Initially, I was hooked by the idea of a protagonist who becomes a postman in another world, guided by an enigmatic "old man." The sudden acquisition of a system after consuming a monster, forcing him to complete missions to satiate his hunger and enhance his abilities, felt like a promising setup. However, some elements felt disjointed early on.

What Works Well

The novel's pacing is definitely one of its strengths, propelling the story forward with a sense of urgency. I also appreciated the intriguing idea behind the gluttony-based power system and the integration of game elements. The descriptions are detailed enough to paint a vivid picture of the world, and the suspense kept me engaged, at least initially. The original worlds and incorporation of game elements were a definite plus for me.

Areas of Concern

One of my major issues stemmed from the protagonist's characterization. The initial depiction of a "calm" and "cautious" individual felt inconsistent with his later actions. For example, the MC's decision to impersonate someone who tried to kill him, despite having alternatives, seemed illogical and out of character. The world-building also felt somewhat lacking. The division of the world into numbered zones felt simplistic and diminished the sense of mystery.

Final Verdict

"The Demon's Menu" has its moments of brilliance, particularly in its pacing and initial concept. However, inconsistencies in characterization, world-building, and plot development ultimately detracted from my overall enjoyment. While it shows promise, it falls short of being a truly exceptional read. I'd give it a cautious 3/5.
