"Surviving in Apocalypse with Children" promised a unique blend of genres – action, adventure, slice of life, even a touch of cultivation in a post-apocalyptic world. The premise of a protagonist navigating the zombie-infested landscape with five children certainly piqued my interest. However, after diving in, I found the execution to be a mixed bag.
First Impressions
Initially, the story grabbed me. A capable female lead, a looming apocalypse, and the responsibility of raising five kids? It sounded like a recipe for compelling drama and heartwarming moments. The early chapters seemed fine, and the set-up was interesting.
What Works Well
The "slice of life" aspects, particularly the focus on childcare and family dynamics, were definitely highlights. I appreciated the initial care the female lead showed for her children. Some readers found the premise cute, and there were moments where the story delivered on that promise. The translation was also frequently praised. The world-building was also rated highly and I can see why.
Areas of Concern
However, the story quickly lost its luster. The pacing felt rushed, with months seemingly passing in the blink of an eye. I found myself struggling to connect with the characters, who often felt one-dimensional and underdeveloped. The sudden appearance of the male lead, and his instant acceptance into the family, felt forced and inorganic. The female lead's transition from a "selfish and cold-hearted" character to a "self-proclaimed champion" felt unconvincing. The plot was chaotic and messy, with too many messy plotlines that went nowhere.

While "Surviving in Apocalypse with Children" has a charming premise and moments of heartwarming family interaction, the underdeveloped characters, rushed pacing, and plot inconsistencies ultimately detract from the overall experience. The novel has a lot of potential, but needs to be executed well. This novel is only recommended for people who want to waste time.
