First Impressions
Initially, I was taken aback by the sheer level of abuse the main character, Mo Di, endures. It's over-the-top, almost cartoonish, and it's definitely not for the faint of heart. The family's irrational hatred towards him, stemming from a twisted belief about his twin sister needing all the nutrients during pregnancy, felt contrived. However, I decided to stick around to see if the promised revenge would be worth it.
What Works Well
The romance between Mo Di and Mu Tian Heng is a definite highlight. Despite the dark themes, their relationship offers a heartwarming contrast. Mu Tian Heng is a doting and supportive partner, and it's genuinely touching to see him care for Mo Di, who has experienced so little kindness in his life. The "face-slapping" moments, where Mo Di gets his revenge on those who wronged him, are undeniably satisfying, especially given the extreme circumstances. Also, the author is great at writing likeable supporting characters.
Areas of Concern
The biggest issue I had was the brain-dead villains. The sister and her blind followers are so illogical and one-dimensional that it often felt frustrating rather than engaging. Their actions are frequently driven by plot convenience rather than believable motivations. The plot relies heavily on coincidences, which can stretch the bounds of believability. The constant melodrama and the sister's "white lotus" behavior can also be grating at times. And, the yandere aspect of the ML felt forced and unnecessary.
