This web novel has a title that's quite a mouthful, but the premise – a guy navigating high school while secretly being a popular female Vtuber – definitely grabbed my attention. I dove in hoping for some lighthearted comedy and maybe a touch of romance, but my experience was a bit of a mixed bag.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the setup. The idea of the protagonist, Kazuto, juggling his real-life identity with his online persona as Kanae, a skilled gamer, felt fresh. The early chapters hinted at some fun interactions and the potential for some sweet, awkward romance. A rejection right out of the gate, but the characters staying friends?! I was hooked to see where this was going.
What Works Well
The moments focusing on the online interactions between Kazuto and the main heroine, who is also a Vtuber, were genuinely enjoyable. There's a certain charm in seeing her treat him like a "little sister" in the virtual world, especially knowing the truth of their identities. The game elements and the descriptions of the virtual world are also pretty interesting, making the livestreaming aspect feel more immersive.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the novel suffers from some significant pacing and tonal issues. Several bizarre and seemingly random events pop up and distract from the core story. One particular arc involving a mansion felt completely out of place and detracted from the overall narrative flow.
