Description
Two hundred years ago, on the Battlefield of the Blue River, the last remaining army of the Empire of Light collapsed in the midst of demonic outcries. As the last Field Marshal and Emperor fell, the chaotic world of the Western River no longer had a common ruler. Factions were formed and endless conflicts ensued, military might became the only currency of survival, and the dream to reunite the lands became the sole goal of many rulers in the generations that came after. In the south-eastern part of the land, a powerful faction with over two hundred years of history – House ZiChuan – fought off the Demons to the east, defended against the House Liu Feng to the west, and contained the House Lin to the south. In order to accomplish their great ambitions and extend the bloodline of their family, countless heroes of ZiChuan gave their lives in order to make this magnificent hymn come to life. This is a story about this legendary family and a hundred years of their blood and tears.

Purple River Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator
My Thoughts on Purple River
Purple River is definitely a novel that demands a bit of patience, but from what I've experienced, it might just reward that patience handsomely. It's a blend of genres – comedy, fantasy, romance, and xuanhuan – that doesn't always mesh perfectly, but when it does, it's quite entertaining.
First Impressions
I'll be honest, my first impression was a bit mixed. The story starts off somewhat slow, and the initial chapters feel a little disjointed. There's a lot of seemingly random humor thrown in, and it wasn't immediately clear how it all tied together. It almost felt like the author was throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. I can see why some readers might be put off early on, as the story is a bit all over the place.
What Works Well
Despite the initial hiccups, there are some genuinely compelling aspects to Purple River. The world-building, while perhaps unconventional, is actually quite detailed. I found myself appreciating the characters, who, despite not always being likeable, feel very human, flaws and all. The protagonist, Xiu, is described as shameless, but his antics provide a lot of the humor, and it’s a refreshing change from the typical overpowered main character. The author also seems to be good at creating cunning antagonists, who aren’t just mindless obstacles but have their own motivations and plans. I especially enjoyed how the author likes to jump forward in time, foreshadowing future events. I also feel like the military war strategy is well thought out.
Areas of Concern
While I find the comedy enjoyable at times, there are moments where it feels forced or inappropriately placed. Some of the humor relies on the protagonist acting foolishly or getting tricked, which can be frustrating, especially when he's supposed to be intelligent. Also, the story sometimes reads more like a history book than a novel, jumping between the MC's perspective and a general overview of events. This can create a sense of disconnect and make it difficult to become fully immersed in the story.
Final Verdict
Purple River is a unique and potentially rewarding read, but it's not without its flaws. If you're willing to stick with it through the initial slow burn and occasional tonal inconsistencies, you might find yourself enjoying its blend of humor, fantasy, and military strategy. Just be prepared for a story that doesn't always take itself too seriously.
