My Thoughts on Professor Li’s Married Life
"Professor Li's Married Life" promised a slow-burn historical romance with a unique premise: a modern professor transmigrating into ancient China and marrying a young girl. While the initial concept intrigued me, my experience with the novel was a bit of a mixed bag.
First Impressions
The early chapters had me hooked, especially the fish-out-of-water aspects of a modern man navigating ancient customs. I was particularly interested in seeing how the male lead (ML), Li Chengze, would grapple with the ethical considerations of marrying a fifteen-year-old girl. The set up definitely had the potential for a compelling story.
What Works Well
Many readers praised the slice-of-life feel, appreciating the focus on the ML building his family and finances. I found the initial dynamic between Li Chengze and his young wife to be quite cute, especially the "hot and cold" trope where he'd gently scold her and then shower her with affection. Some readers also appreciated the ML's consideration for his wife's age and body, delaying consummation and pregnancy out of concern. I also appreciated that the novel wasn't full of face-slapping and revenge.
Areas of Concern
However, as I read further, some issues started to surface. The age gap, while addressed, never quite sat right with me, and I found myself agreeing with readers who felt the ML sometimes acted more like a parent than a partner. The relationship felt a little too vertical, lacking the depth and equality I crave in a romance.
Several readers also pointed out the ML's perceived lack of agency and his inability to protect his wife adequately. I can see where they're coming from, as there were moments when I wished he'd be more proactive in dealing with threats. The plot also felt disjointed, with several unresolved storylines and a lack of satisfying conclusions. The ending, in particular, was criticized as abrupt and incomplete. I wish the author would have given the story a better ending.

Final Verdict
"Professor Li's Married Life" has its moments, particularly if you're looking for a light, slow-paced historical romance. However, the uneven plot, the ethically questionable age gap, and the abrupt ending ultimately left me feeling a bit unsatisfied. It's an okay read, but not one I'd highly recommend unless you're specifically seeking a non-revenge focused historical with a slice-of-life vibe.
