"Professional Lover" is a completed original web novel that I recently dove into, and it’s definitely a rollercoaster of emotions. The story blends mature themes, psychological depth, romance, and a slice of life, making for a compelling, albeit sometimes challenging, read.
First Impressions
Going in, I knew I was in for some melodrama, and the author doesn't shy away from it. From the start, the relationship between the MC and ML is fraught with tension, power imbalances, and emotional baggage. It’s not a lighthearted read by any means, but it hooked me with its raw portrayal of flawed characters navigating complex situations.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of "Professional Lover" is the character development, particularly for the ML. Initially, he's arrogant and treats the MC poorly, almost like a possession. Watching him realize the harm he's caused and then embark on a long journey of self-improvement is genuinely satisfying. The MC's journey of self-discovery and learning to prioritize his own well-being is also a highlight. I appreciated that the author didn’t rush the reconciliation process; the MC holds his ground, making the ML work for forgiveness. The angst and heartache are palpable, and the story explores themes of self-love, redemption, and the complexities of relationships with depth.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, there were moments where the melodrama felt a bit over the top. Some of the plot points and character reactions felt somewhat inconsistent. Additionally, the title, "Professional Lover," feels a bit misleading, as it doesn't quite capture the essence of the story's deeper themes.
