"Please Call Me Ghost Catcher" had me intrigued from the get-go with its blend of fantasy, horror, and mystery. The concept of a protagonist catching ghosts in a supernatural setting? Sign me up! But after diving in, I found myself experiencing a bit of a rollercoaster ride.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked. The calm and intelligent MC was a breath of fresh air. The early chapters did a great job of setting the stage for a promising supernatural story. I was excited to see how the plot would unfold and mysteries would be revealed.
What Works Well
The core concept is undeniably strong. The idea of espers and ghost-catching is compelling, and the author has clearly put thought into the world-building. I particularly enjoyed the initial introduction of the esper abilities and the hint of a larger world of supernatural phenomena. I also liked the fact that there's no harem, something that is a big plus for me.
Areas of Concern
As I continued reading, I started to notice some inconsistencies in the characters, which impacted my overall enjoyment. Sometimes, the protagonist's personality seemed to shift without a clear reason, leading to moments that felt a little jarring. The portrayal of some of the other characters, particularly Zhou Han, felt somewhat cringeworthy, and their interactions with the MC were difficult to get through. The dynamic between espers and ordinary people also felt a little underdeveloped, with the espers often coming across as arrogant and unlikeable. This made it difficult to connect with the characters and invest in their journeys. I also didn't like how the main character was hiding his abilities.

"Please Call Me Ghost Catcher" has a fantastic premise and some genuinely engaging elements. However, inconsistencies in character development and some questionable character interactions ultimately held it back from reaching its full potential. While I appreciate the supernatural setting and the promise of mystery-solving, the execution in certain areas left me wanting more. If you're a fan of the genre, it might be worth giving it a try, but be prepared for some potentially frustrating character dynamics.
