Oyaji Kanojo Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator
My Thoughts on Oyaji Kanojo
"Oyaji Kanojo" is definitely a novel that left me feeling conflicted. With its blend of ecchi, gender bender, school life, and slice-of-life elements, it tries to cater to a wide audience, but whether it succeeds is another question entirely. The premise, focusing on a transmigration from male to female, definitely piqued my interest, but the execution had some definite highs and lows.
First Impressions
I have to admit, my first impression wasn't stellar. The initial chapters felt a bit rough around the edges. The protagonist's initial personality grated on me a little. He came across as somewhat abrasive, and that made it hard to connect with him, especially given the synopsis painted a different picture. It took a while to reconcile the initial portrayal with the deeper themes the story seemed to be aiming for.
What Works Well
Despite my initial reservations, I found myself appreciating certain aspects of the story as I read on. The novel explores interesting themes of self-worth, acceptance, and the complexities of friendship. I particularly enjoyed the realistic portrayal of the protagonist navigating the challenges of being a girl, something that often feels glossed over in similar stories. The characters, for the most part, felt well-developed and relatable, adding depth and enjoyment to the narrative.
Areas of Concern
One of my main concerns revolved around the protagonist's initial behavior. While the story aims for realism, some of the protagonist's actions felt a bit off-putting. This is particularly true when it comes to the ecchi elements, which at times felt unnecessary and detracted from the more profound themes the novel was trying to explore. Also, the translator seems to have dropped the story, which is a big shame.
Final Verdict
"Oyaji Kanojo" is a mixed bag. It has moments of brilliance, exploring complex themes with a touch of realism. However, it's also weighed down by some questionable character choices and unnecessary ecchi elements. If you're willing to look past the initial rough patches and appreciate the deeper messages, it might be worth a read. However, be warned that the translation is incomplete, so you might be left hanging. Ultimately, I'd recommend approaching this novel with cautious optimism.
