My Thoughts on Medical Princess

"Medical Princess" is a web novel that I dove into with high hopes, given my fondness for the reincarnation/revenge genre, especially when set in historical China. While it has its charms, it ultimately left me with mixed feelings.

First Impressions

Initially, I was intrigued by the premise of a female lead reborn to avenge her past life. The idea of a "medical princess" also piqued my interest. However, I quickly discovered that the medical aspect is significantly downplayed, almost to the point of being misleading. The story leans heavily into court intrigue, family drama, and the female lead's quest to reclaim her identity and exact revenge.

What Works Well

The revenge aspect is definitely a driving force. Watching the protagonist, Qin Wanru (aka Shao Wanru), cleverly navigate the treacherous waters of the court and family politics can be quite satisfying. The author does a decent job of portraying her transformation from a naive girl to a calculating woman, hardened by her past experiences. The slow-burn romance with the male lead, Chu Liuchen, also has its appeal, evolving from initial animosity and bullying into a doting, protective relationship. I appreciated the build-up and how the male lead's character gradually softened as he fell for her. The story is quite addictive and moves quickly.

Areas of Concern

Despite its strengths, "Medical Princess" suffers from several issues. The title is misleading, and the early interactions between the leads can be off-putting. The male lead's initial behavior comes across as overly aggressive and borderline abusive, and the female lead's passivity in those situations is frustrating.

The plot also feels convoluted at times, with an overwhelming number of characters and intricate schemes that can be difficult to follow. The antagonists often resort to repetitive tactics, which becomes tiresome. Furthermore, the fact that the main character gets married at 14 might be a bit off-putting for some readers.

Final Verdict

"Medical Princess" is like a guilty pleasure. It's not particularly groundbreaking or profound, but it can be enjoyable if you're in the mood for a revenge-driven historical romance with plenty of drama. Just don't expect a strong focus on medicine, and be prepared for some questionable character dynamics in the early chapters. I'd say it's a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
