I appreciate that the male lead isn't portrayed as a typical "brutal woman hater." Instead, he's somewhat socially awkward but genuinely interested in Mary's intellect and kindness. He recognizes the abuse she's suffered and actively tries to help her, which is a refreshing change of pace. I also like that Mary isn't a pushover.
