My Thoughts on Kono Ai ni Hizamazuke
"Kono Ai ni Hizamazuke" certainly left me with a lot to unpack. Diving into a BL novel with tags like "forced relationship" and "smut" always comes with certain expectations, and this one definitely delivered on some while falling short on others. My overall impression is mixed, landing somewhere in the middle ground.
First Impressions
Going in, I was prepared for a potentially dark and morally gray story. The premise of a yakuza young master and his childhood friend immediately sets the stage for conflict and power imbalances. I was curious to see how the author would navigate these tricky themes and whether a genuine romance could blossom amidst the forced circumstances.
What Works Well
The explicit content is undeniably a significant draw for many readers, and from what I've read, it seems to deliver on that front. The pacing, with a reported 50:50 plot-to-smut ratio, keeps things moving and provides a balance for those who enjoy both elements. I can appreciate when a story commits to its chosen genre and doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of its premise.
Areas of Concern
My main reservation lies in the romantic development, or rather, the perceived lack thereof. The "forced relationship" trope can be a slippery slope, and it appears that "Kono Ai ni Hizamazuke" struggles to convincingly portray a genuine, reciprocal love between the main characters. The male lead's actions, particularly his disregard for the MC's autonomy and achievements, raise serious questions about the nature of their relationship. It leans heavily into potentially problematic territory, and if not handled with extreme care, it can easily come across as glorifying unhealthy dynamics.

Final Verdict
"Kono Ai ni Hizamazuke" is a complex and controversial novel that will likely divide readers. If you're looking for a straightforward romance with healthy relationship dynamics, this probably isn't for you. However, if you're drawn to dark themes, explicit content, and morally ambiguous characters, it might be worth exploring with a critical eye. Just be aware of the potential triggers and problematic elements before diving in.
