"Killing Show" is a wild ride, a dark dystopian novel that's equal parts thrilling and disturbing. I went in expecting a battle royale-esque story, and I definitely got that, but it's so much more. It's a brutal examination of class disparity, the desensitizing effects of media, and the resilience of the human spirit, even in the face of unimaginable horrors.

First Impressions

The premise immediately grabbed me. A future where the rich are monsters and the poor are fodder for their entertainment? Sign me up (though maybe with a strong stomach). The initial chapters plunged me headfirst into a world of gore, violence, and moral decay. It's not a novel for the faint of heart, and I quickly realized that trigger warnings are absolutely necessary.

What Works Well

The main couple, Xia Tian and Bai Jingan, are fantastic. Their dynamic is a slow burn, evolving from a partnership forged in survival to a deep, meaningful romance. I loved how they balanced each other out – Xia Tian's impulsive energy and Bai Jingan's cool intellect. They’re both incredibly strong characters, but not without their flaws and scars. This makes their reliance on each other all the more believable and endearing.

The action sequences are gripping, and the world-building, while not always subtle, is effective in creating a truly oppressive atmosphere. I appreciated the social commentary, even when it was heavy-handed. The author doesn't shy away from exploring the darkest aspects of human nature, and that's what makes the story so compelling. The supporting characters, while some may be one-dimensional, added depth to the narrative.

Areas of Concern

The plot can become repetitive at times. The cycle of the MC standing out, being targeted by a powerful figure, barely surviving, and then repeating the process in the next game show can feel a bit predictable.
