Description
Baisha, after being transported to the interstellar era, plunged into a life on a fringe star notorious for its poverty throughout the galaxy. Having saved up three years of tuition by fishing, she seized the only opportunity and took part in the Federal Military Academy’s entrance examination. Unexpectedly, although she passed the test, she couldn’t attend the school. Because the genetic test during the medical examination revealed: she wasn’t human. To be precise, she was an Aresian. The Aresians, the absolute rulers of the neighboring empire’s civilization. They look no different from humans but possess the ability to transform their psychic energy into beast forms. Thus, Baisha was taken back overnight to the Imperial Military Academy. The Empire was truly lavish, offering her money, a house, and a spaceship. Overnight, Baisha went from rags to riches. Her only problem was that her classmates were not easy to talk to. In the Psychic Combat class, her classmates’ psychic manifestations were all ferocious beasts like tigers, leopards, eagles, and wolves, extremely fierce and intimidating enough to make three children cry at a glance. However, Baisha transformed into a white, fluffy ball on the spot. A Silver-throated Long-tailed Tit, with a pair of black beady eyes, feathers as fluffy and soft as snow, a delicate voice, and a petite figure. Her classmates at the military academy: … Honestly, they had to be careful not to accidentally kill her psychic form. Baisha was a legend who emerged from the fringe star. Rumors said she was the Empire’s forgotten gem, whose genetic test catapulted her from obscurity to fame, eventually making her a new student at the Imperial Military Academy. It sounded like the setup for a decorative figure. That was until a joint military exercise between the Federation and the Empire, where Baisha, surrounded by elites from other military academies, single-handedly fought against five opponents, beating those arrogant geniuses to the ground— Until a sudden Star Worm Tide invaded the competition venue, and Baisha, under the live broadcast signal to the whole world, released her psychic form. That tiny Long-tailed Tit evolved on the spot into the legendary psychic form “Xuan Bird”— The Federation: Cunning Imperials, pretending to be weak! The Empire: Did we just see a mirage? A Xuan Bird? Isn’t that a psychic symbol exclusive to the royal family?! The Emperor, watching the competition live on the star network: “…”

My Thoughts on I Refuse to Be Human
"I Refuse to Be Human" is a wild ride that blends adventure, fantasy, mecha, and sci-fi into a surprisingly engaging story. While it might not be perfect, it definitely kept me entertained, and I can see why it has a dedicated following.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the intriguing premise and the sheer number of tags associated with the novel. It promised a complex world with plenty of action, and for the most part, it delivered. The beginning focuses on the MC's childhood and early relationships, which I found quite charming and well-developed. It definitely hooked me in and made me invested in her journey.
What Works Well
The strongest aspect of this novel is undoubtedly its plot. It's well-paced, with a good balance of mystery and action. I also really appreciated the strong female protagonist who defies expectations. The world-building is solid, and the character designs are undeniably appealing. The author created a universe where a female character can rise to power without facing gender discrimination, as long as she is worthy and strong. I found the coronation scene particularly captivating. The friendships the MC forges along the way feel genuine, and I enjoyed seeing those relationships develop.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel overall, there were a few areas that could have been stronger. Several readers, including myself, felt that the academy aspect was underdeveloped. I was hoping for more focus on her academic life and training. Additionally, the plot can feel a bit rushed at times, with certain details glossed over. The description seems to give away too much of the story and that made me expect exactly what was coming next.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "I Refuse to Be Human" is an enjoyable read with a strong plot, compelling characters, and a unique blend of genres. If you're looking for a novel with a powerful female protagonist and aren't too concerned about a heavy romance focus, I'd recommend giving this one a try. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
