Description

"I Detest the Heroine, so I’ll Do my Best as the Villainess" is a fun romp through the well-trodden otome isekai landscape, and I can definitely see why it’s garnered a dedicated following. It's not groundbreaking, but it's a highly enjoyable read if you're looking for something lighthearted with a sassy protagonist.
First Impressions
From the get-go, I was intrigued by the premise. A villainess who actively embraces her role because the heroine is just that annoying? Sign me up! The initial chapters immediately pulled me in with the promise of witty banter and satisfying takedowns, and for the most part, the story delivers.
What Works Well
The biggest draw, without a doubt, is the dynamic between our villainess, Ilse, and her butler, Joshua. Their interactions are comedic gold, and I found myself constantly anticipating their next exchange. Ilse herself is a refreshing take on the villainess trope. She's intelligent, calculative, and genuinely enjoys causing chaos, especially when it involves outsmarting the dense heroine. I also appreciated the story's willingness to poke fun at generic otome game tropes, particularly the "perfect" heroine archetype and the dense male leads who flock to her. The author manages to craft a narrative that is both entertaining and self-aware.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the story, there are a few points that held it back from being a perfect read. The ending felt somewhat rushed. I would have loved to see a more fleshed-out conclusion, especially regarding the relationship between Ilse and Joshua. The story could have benefited from a slower burn and more detailed exploration of their feelings.
