Okay, so "How to Make a Childhood Friend!" definitely grabbed my attention with that title. I mean, who hasn't wished they had that classic childhood friend dynamic? The premise is undeniably quirky and promises a fun, lighthearted read, and I went in expecting a hefty dose of comedy and romance. The cover art certainly helps sell that image.
What Works Well
The humor really shines in this novel. The situations our protagonist finds himself in are often absurd, and the misunderstandings that arise from his, shall we say, unique approach to making friends are genuinely laugh-out-loud funny. It's a classic setup with a dense protagonist surrounded by adoring (and often clumsy) love interests. If you're looking for a story that doesn't take itself too seriously and just wants to make you smile, this one delivers. The "love interest falls in love first" trope is also present, which is always a win in my book. There's something inherently charming about watching someone fall head-over-heels for our oblivious MC.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the comedic elements, I did find myself wishing for a bit more depth from the main character. He remains fairly static throughout the story. While his lack of common sense contributes to the humor, I couldn't help but feel that a little character growth would have elevated the story significantly.
