My Thoughts on High Priest
"High Priest" presented an intriguing premise that initially grabbed my attention, but ultimately left me with mixed feelings. The blend of genres – adventure, comedy, fantasy, and yaoi – promised a unique reading experience, and while it delivered on some fronts, other aspects fell short of my expectations.
First Impressions
The setup is undeniably captivating. Our main character is essentially a reincarnated retiree who chose modern Earth as his chill-out zone. However, Earth's karma is all messed up, creating an imbalance that allows monsters to invade. This concept of Earth's protection failing and the subsequent interdimensional chaos immediately drew me in. The idea of a hands-off MC guiding humanity through this crisis also felt refreshing.
What Works Well
I appreciated the story's lighthearted tone and the MC's somewhat detached approach. It was interesting to see the military and his friends stepping up to fight the demons, with the MC offering guidance when needed. The world-building, particularly the intricacies of Earth's karma and the reasons behind the invasion, were well-developed and kept me invested in the overarching plot. The author does a good job of creating a compelling narrative with the invasion and MC's role in it.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the humor became a sticking point for me. While the comedic undertones were initially amusing, the constant jokes, often involving characters acting weird and leaving everyone speechless, felt repetitive and disruptive. Instead of enhancing the story, they often detracted from the serious moments and made it difficult to fully immerse myself in the plot. I found myself wishing the author had dialed back the comedy to let the story breathe. It felt forced and ultimately undermined the overall narrative.
Final Verdict
"High Priest" has a lot of potential, and the core concept is genuinely interesting. However, the overabundance of comedic elements ultimately hinders the story's overall impact. If you enjoy lighthearted stories with a focus on humor, you might find this novel enjoyable. However, if you prefer a more serious and immersive reading experience, the constant jokes might become tiresome. Overall, I'd recommend approaching this novel with cautious optimism.
