However, it quickly became apparent that the execution veered into darker territory than I anticipated.
What Works Well
Despite some serious issues, the novel does explore the psychological impact of past trauma on both the main characters. The male lead's controlling behavior, while problematic, is hinted to stem from past experiences. The author attempts to portray the agonizing push and pull between the couple as they grapple with their feelings and the unhealthy foundation of their relationship. The initial premise of needing to get married to survive is interesting and unique.
Areas of Concern
The biggest issue, and one that several readers have highlighted, is the male lead's behavior. I cannot stress enough that the power dynamics in this relationship are extremely unbalanced, and some of his actions cross the line into abuse and r*pe. The manipulation, blackmail, and forced situations create a deeply uncomfortable reading experience. The lack of substantial development for secondary characters like the college friend and Dong Ge also felt like a missed opportunity. The story focuses almost entirely on the central couple's toxic interactions, which can become repetitive and draining.
