My Thoughts on Get Married
"Get Married" is a novel that certainly evokes strong reactions, and after diving into it, I can understand why. It's a story centered around a marriage of convenience that quickly spirals into a complex web of power dynamics, emotional manipulation, and questionable consent. While there are elements that could appeal to readers who enjoy intense drama, it's definitely not a lighthearted romance.
First Impressions
Initially, the premise intrigued me. The idea of a forced marriage due to circumstance, particularly with an older love interest, had potential for compelling character development and emotional exploration. However, it quickly became apparent that the execution veered into darker territory than I anticipated.
What Works Well
Despite some serious issues, the novel does explore the psychological impact of past trauma on both the main characters. The male lead's controlling behavior, while problematic, is hinted to stem from past experiences. The author attempts to portray the agonizing push and pull between the couple as they grapple with their feelings and the unhealthy foundation of their relationship. The initial premise of needing to get married to survive is interesting and unique.
Areas of Concern
The biggest issue, and one that several readers have highlighted, is the male lead's behavior. I cannot stress enough that the power dynamics in this relationship are extremely unbalanced, and some of his actions cross the line into abuse and r*pe. The manipulation, blackmail, and forced situations create a deeply uncomfortable reading experience. The lack of substantial development for secondary characters like the college friend and Dong Ge also felt like a missed opportunity. The story focuses almost entirely on the central couple's toxic interactions, which can become repetitive and draining.

Final Verdict
"Get Married" is a difficult novel to recommend. While it attempts to explore complex themes of trauma and redemption, the problematic power dynamics and instances of abuse overshadow any potential positives. If you are sensitive to issues of consent, manipulation, and toxic relationships, I would strongly advise against reading this. If you are looking for a lighthearted romance, this is definitely not it. Proceed with extreme caution.
