"Geek Mob Mercenary Knows His Place (LN)" is a bit of a mixed bag, and after diving into the available volumes, I can see why the ratings are all over the place. It definitely has some interesting elements, but also some frustrating ones that hold it back from reaching its full potential.

First Impressions

The premise intrigued me – a seemingly unremarkable, even cowardly, protagonist navigating the dangerous world of space mercenaries. I was hoping for a story about an underdog cleverly surviving in a cutthroat environment, maybe even growing into a more confident character. However, my initial expectations were quickly challenged.

What Works Well

The world-building seems to be a strong point, with an empire struggling against corruption and rebellion. There's a sense of larger political forces at play, and I appreciate the potential depth this adds to the story. Also, the idea that the MC allows himself to be walked over because he understands the corrupt system and the repercussions of retaliating is interesting. The MC isn't spineless, he's pragmatic. He'll fight when he needs to, especially to protect himself or his friends. I found this refreshing compared to the typical "reluctant hero" trope.

Areas of Concern

The biggest sticking point for me is the protagonist. While some defend his actions as pragmatic, I found his constant complaints and lack of ambition grating. He comes across as spineless more often than not, which makes it difficult to root for him. I also noticed the "harem" tag seems misleading. Romantic development is practically nonexistent, which is disappointing if you're coming in expecting that genre. The pacing can also be a problem, with some feeling like nothing significant happens across entire volumes. The introduction of "super ships" seems to derail things, overshadowing other characters and making them feel irrelevant.
