The author painted a vivid picture of a society crumbling under corruption and environmental disaster. I found myself holding my breath, constantly wondering how Su Yin would manage to pull her family through each crisis.

The first half of the novel, focusing on the family's escape and Su Yin's resourcefulness, is where the story shines. I appreciated how she gathered a loyal following of people who trusted her judgment. The author created a compelling dynamic between her and the villagers, making their struggles feel personal and impactful.
