My Thoughts on Everlasting Sword God
I dove into Everlasting Sword God with some excitement, given its popularity and the promise of a classic xianxia adventure. While it has elements that might appeal to fans of the genre, I found myself ultimately underwhelmed.
First Impressions
Initially, the story sets up a protagonist who's supposedly reached the pinnacle of cultivation, about to ascend to a higher realm. It's an interesting starting point, deviating from the typical "weak-to-strong" trope. However, I quickly felt a disconnect with the world and the characters.
What Works Well
The premise of an already overpowered MC navigating new realms and encountering past connections is intriguing. I can see the appeal of a story where the protagonist isn't constantly struggling against everyone. The idea of him imparting wisdom and guidance to his disciples also has potential. It's a power fantasy, and if you're looking for that, this might scratch the itch.
Areas of Concern
One of my biggest issues was the character writing. I found it difficult to connect with the protagonist, who, despite being portrayed as detached and wise, sometimes came across as inconsistent and even hypocritical. Some of his actions, particularly those involving the fate of others, felt contradictory to his supposed pursuit of enlightenment. There's also a sense that the supporting characters are dumbed down to make the MC seem more intelligent, which feels contrived. The romance also feels forced, making it hard to invest in the relationships.

Final Verdict
Everlasting Sword God has a solid foundation with its overpowered protagonist and realm-hopping adventure. However, the inconsistent character writing, forced romance, and questionable plot decisions ultimately detract from the overall experience. While some might enjoy the power fantasy aspect, I believe there are stronger xianxia novels out there that offer a more compelling and well-rounded narrative. It's not terrible, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations.
