My Thoughts on Eternal Life
"Eternal Life" definitely throws you into the deep end of the xuanhuan pool. The premise is intriguing, and the initial chapters certainly grabbed my attention, promising a journey of cultivation and ambition. It's a world ripe with potential, filled with demons, devils, and immortals all vying for power.
First Impressions
I was initially hooked by the MC's unique background. He's not your typical chosen one, and that immediately made him more interesting. The early chapters set a decent pace, introducing the cultivation system and the world's power dynamics. However, my enthusiasm waned as I progressed.
What Works Well
One aspect I found consistently engaging was the underlying story. The grand narrative, with its complex political intrigue and ancient secrets, kept me turning the page even when other elements faltered. I also appreciated that the female lead seems to possess depth and inner conflict, which is a refreshing change of pace in this genre. The ambition of the MC, and his willingness to use his brain is a plus.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the main character's development, or lack thereof. Several readers have pointed out his perceived "slave-like nature" throughout the story, and I have to agree. While he strives for power and freedom, his actions often contradict his goals, making him feel more like a rebellious servant than a truly independent force.
Another significant problem I encountered was the seemingly endless cycle of conflict. The MC constantly faces opponents who, despite being on the verge of defeat, are conveniently rescued and powered up, leading to repetitive and frustrating encounters. This, coupled with a cultivation system that feels inconsistent and poorly defined, made it difficult to fully invest in the story. The constant showing off of the MC, and the repetitive scenes.

Final Verdict
Overall, "Eternal Life" is a mixed bag. While the underlying story and some of the characters offer moments of genuine intrigue, the flawed protagonist, repetitive conflicts, and inconsistent cultivation system ultimately detract from the overall experience. It's a novel with potential, but one that ultimately falls short of its promise. I'd give it a tentative 3 out of 5 stars. Proceed with caution, and be prepared for a potentially frustrating, but occasionally interesting, ride.
