"Epoch of Twilight" presents a fascinating premise: a world plunged into a gradual apocalypse, complete with game-like elements for our protagonist. The initial concept hooked me, promising a blend of action, adventure, and survival in a world undergoing monstrous changes. However, my journey through this novel was a bit of a rollercoaster, with some highs and some definite lows.

First Impressions

Initially, I was drawn in by the realistic depiction of the apocalypse. The story doesn't just throw you into chaos overnight; it builds gradually, with the environment and creatures evolving over time. I found the main character to be relatable, possessing a mix of bravery, cowardice, kindness, and ruthlessness that felt appropriate for the circumstances. The system mechanics felt like a natural extension of the world rather than a crutch for the protagonist, which was a refreshing change.

The world-building is undeniably a strong point. The author vividly portrays the transformed Earth, and the descriptions of the monsters and environments are captivating. My biggest issue, and one echoed by many readers, is the protagonist's character development, or rather, its deterioration. Around the mid-point, the MC's actions become increasingly questionable, bordering on reprehensible. His interactions with women, in particular, take a turn for the worse, and his decision-making often seems driven more by impulse than logic. This shift significantly impacted my ability to root for him.

I also noticed a decline in the writing quality. What started as detailed world-building devolved into excessive descriptions of mundane activities, slowing the plot's momentum to a crawl. The introduction of increasingly absurd plot elements, like a sudden volcano eruption followed by a flood and then a nuclear radiation zone, felt jarring and disconnected.

"Epoch of Twilight" had the potential to be a truly exceptional novel. The initial world-building, realistic apocalypse, and relatable protagonist drew me in. However, the decline in writing quality, the questionable character development, and the increasingly absurd plot elements ultimately detracted from my enjoyment.
