I dove in expecting a typical zombie apocalypse story, but what I found was a blend of cyberpunk, martial arts, and even a touch of cultivation, all wrapped up in a found-family narrative that really resonated with me.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a bit hesitant. The sheer number of genres listed made me wonder if the novel would suffer from an identity crisis. The early chapters, focusing on high school drama, felt a little amateurish and made me question if I was in the right place. However, I decided to stick with it, and I'm glad I did.
What Works Well
The world-building is a standout. The author creates a compelling post-apocalyptic world divided into distinct districts, each with its own unique culture and challenges. I found myself drawn into the intricate social hierarchies and the struggles of those living in the lower districts. The V587 crew, our found family, is a major highlight. Each member has a distinct personality, a compelling backstory, and unique abilities that contribute to the team's overall strength.
Song Ke, the female lead, is a bit of a polarizing figure. Some find her lack of intelligence frustrating, but I appreciated her simplicity and her unwavering kindness. She's not a damsel in distress; she's a powerhouse who leads with her strength and her heart. The male lead, Zhuang Qingyan, is an intriguing character – a brilliant strategist with a touch of darkness. Their slow-burn romance is subtle but satisfying. The action sequences are well-crafted, keeping me engaged and invested in the characters' struggles.

While the world-building is generally strong, some found the technological development inconsistent. I also noticed that the ending felt a bit rushed, with some plot points glossed over.
