"Doomsday Game" presented an intriguing premise that immediately grabbed my attention: a blend of action, adventure, horror, mystery, and even a touch of the supernatural, all wrapped up in a game-like scenario. I dove in hoping for a thrilling ride, and while it had its moments, my overall experience was a bit of a mixed bag.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were promising. The world-building was decent, and the hints of mystery surrounding the MC's amnesia had me hooked. The amusement park setting added a layer of unsettling fun, and I was eager to see how the characters would navigate this deadly game.
What Works Well
The plot, for the most part, kept me engaged. There were definitely some interesting arcs that had me on the edge of my seat, and the survival aspect was well-executed. If you're a fan of adventure stories with problem-solving elements, "Doomsday Game" might scratch that itch. The characters, especially the MC and ML, had well-defined outlines, making it easy to understand their motivations, even if I didn't always agree with their choices.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue, and I suspect the issue for many readers, lies in the romantic development. For a novel tagged as yaoi, the romance felt incredibly subtle, almost non-existent for a significant portion of the story. It felt like the author only remembered the BL aspect towards the end, leading to a rushed and somewhat unsatisfying conclusion on that front. The relationship felt more like a strong friendship with a sudden, late-game romantic reveal. Also, I was disappointed that the intimate moments between the main characters were censored.

"Doomsday Game" is an okay read if you're primarily interested in the adventure and survival aspects of the plot. However, if you're seeking a deeply romantic BL story, you might be left wanting more. It's a decent choice for beginner BL readers or those who enjoy game-type novels without expecting the same level of polish as something like "Earth is Online." Ultimately, it's a fun but flawed novel that I'd recommend with the caveat that the romance is not the main focus.
