Description
In a world where others face the apocalypse with just a dog for company, Ning Xin faces it with a whole mental asylum under her care. She had to look after about five or six patients, representing various mental disorders she knew of: schizophrenia, mania, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression… Determined to return to the real world, Ning Xin bravely faced the challenge, only to find that the situation was completely different from what she had expected. Instead of being helpless patients, each of the inmates was a powerful figure, and she, the director, was the one who seemed pitiable. One night, as she was preparing to sleep after locking the door, a tall man pushed open the door and said in a soft voice: “Director, director, they’re bullying me, stuffing zombies into my blanket.” Ning Xin looked outside to see bodies scattered all around. …Who was bullying whom, after all?

My Thoughts on Doomsday Asylum
"Doomsday Asylum" presented itself as quite the intriguing read, blending apocalypse themes with psychological elements and a dash of romance. I went in expecting a certain level of chaos and patient management, but what I found was something a bit different, and ultimately a mixed bag.
First Impressions
The initial premise definitely grabbed my attention. The idea of a protagonist, Ning Xin, finding herself in a strange asylum after death and having to navigate its bizarre inhabitants was compelling. I was eager to see how the "doomsday" aspect played out and how she would cope with the challenges of caring for mentally unstable patients with supernatural abilities.
What Works Well
The unique storyline is, without a doubt, one of the strongest aspects of this novel. The concept of visiting different worlds to "adopt" patients into the asylum is creative and offers a lot of potential for world-building and character development. I also appreciated the slow-burn romance between Ning Xin and Nie Ran, the male lead, despite his initial… abrasiveness. The story balances action, fantasy, and psychological elements well. The characters are indeed interesting, each with a tragic backstory that explains their mental state and powers. The female lead is not annoying or headache-inducing.
Areas of Concern
My main issue, echoed by many, is the pacing and the abrupt ending. The story felt rushed towards the end, leaving me with a sense of incompleteness. I felt like the premise of the asylum director was not fully realized because the MC only ends up with three patients. The focus on the first patient takes up a lot of the story. The title is a bit misleading because it's not about an apocalypse.

Final Verdict
"Doomsday Asylum" is a novel with a lot of potential that, unfortunately, falls short of its promise. The unique premise and interesting characters are definitely a draw, but the rushed pacing, abrupt ending, and potentially triggering content make it a somewhat flawed experience. I'd recommend it as a quick read if you're looking for something different, but don't expect a fully fleshed-out world or a deeply satisfying conclusion. I give it a 3/5.
