My Thoughts on Doll Survival Game
"Doll Survival Game" is a web novel that definitely kept me on my toes, even if it wasn't always for the best reasons. It's got a unique premise and a blend of genres – action, adventure, fantasy, and a little shounen ai on the side – that makes it stand out in the crowded isekai market. I went in expecting a wild ride, and I certainly got one!
First Impressions
The initial hook is strong. We're thrown into a world where the MC is navigating deadly "instances," and the stakes are immediately high. I found myself intrigued by the curse aspect and the interdimensional travel elements. The story definitely has a certain charm, and the promise of a calm, clever protagonist piqued my interest.
What Works Well
The intricate scenarios and the dynamic between characters within those scenarios are a definite strength. I enjoyed trying to piece together the clues and understand the underlying mysteries of the world. The author does a great job of creating a sense of danger and suspense, which kept me engaged. I also appreciated the character growth, seeing how the protagonist adapts and evolves as he faces increasingly difficult challenges.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies in the relationship between the MC and the love interest. Their interactions feel somewhat forced and rely too heavily on veiled insinuations. I often felt like I was missing something, not because the plot was complex, but because the dialogue felt unnecessarily cryptic. While I appreciate a clever protagonist, the constant need to showcase his intelligence through vague pronouncements became a bit tiresome. It felt like the story could have benefited from more straightforward communication and less reliance on implication.
Final Verdict
"Doll Survival Game" is a mixed bag. The intriguing plot and well-crafted instances are definite highlights. However, the forced romantic relationship and the protagonist's sometimes-annoying cleverness detract from the overall experience. While I'm not sure I'll personally stick with it to the end, I think it's worth checking out if you're a fan of the "unlimited flow" genre and are willing to overlook some of its flaws. I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
