"Did the Villain Act Too Cute Towards Shizun?" is a completed xianxia novel that I recently dove into, and while I appreciate the ambition and potential, I walked away with mixed feelings. It's a story packed with action, adventure, and a hefty dose of angst, all wrapped up in a master-disciple relationship that blossoms into something more.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with their intriguing premise: a transmigrated protagonist navigating a dangerous world and a complex relationship with his Shizun. The blend of comedy and mystery kept me engaged, and I was eager to see how the romance would unfold. There was a certain charm to the dynamic between the characters that I found quite appealing.
What Works Well
The strong love interests and the initially compelling student-teacher dynamic are definite highlights. I enjoyed the early stages of their relationship, where the "acting cute" aspect provided some lighthearted moments amidst the darker themes. The world-building is also well-executed, creating a believable and engaging xianxia setting. The story definitely has the capacity to pull on your heartstrings.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I found myself growing somewhat weary of the constant angst. The male lead's "redemption arc," or lack thereof, left me feeling a little unsatisfied. It felt as though the story relied too heavily on past trauma without allowing the ML to truly earn his forgiveness. The resolution felt rushed. The narrative, for me, started to drag, and I found myself skimming through certain sections in the later chapters. I felt that the ending didn't quite deliver the emotional punch it promised.

If you're a fan of angst-heavy stories and enjoy a good dose of dog blood, this might be right up your alley. However, if you're looking for a deeply satisfying redemption arc and a perfectly paced narrative, you might want to approach with caution. I'd give it a tentative recommendation, but with the caveat that it's not for the faint of heart.
