My Thoughts on Dage
"Dage" is a novel that definitely left an impression on me, and one that I've thought about for a while. The story centers around Wei Qian, who becomes the de facto parent for his younger sister and an adopted brother, Wei Zhiyuan, and it's a compelling journey of family, responsibility, and unexpected love.
First Impressions
What immediately grabbed me was the premise: a young boy forced to grow up fast and navigate the harsh realities of life to provide for his family. The slice-of-life elements, depicting their struggles and small victories, were incredibly engaging, and I was quickly invested in these characters and their well-being.
What Works Well
The strength of "Dage" lies in its character development and the exploration of familial bonds. Wei Qian is a compelling protagonist; a flawed but ultimately good person striving to do his best in a difficult situation. His growth from a rebellious kid to a responsible adult is a highlight of the novel. I particularly enjoyed seeing the dynamic between the siblings evolve over time. The author does a fantastic job of portraying the complexities of their relationships.
Wei Zhiyuan, the adopted brother, is another fascinating character. His deep affection for Wei Qian, which eventually blossoms into romantic love, adds another layer of complexity to the story. The novel also delves into themes of dreams, determination, and the realities of life for those at the bottom of society, making it a thought-provoking read.
Areas of Concern
The romance, while a significant part of the story, felt somewhat rushed to me. I would have liked to see a more gradual development of the romantic feelings between Wei Qian and Wei Zhiyuan. I think it could have been fleshed out a bit more.
Final Verdict
Overall, I found "Dage" to be a worthwhile read. It's a story that resonated with me on an emotional level, and I appreciated its exploration of family, responsibility, and the challenges of overcoming adversity. While the pacing of the romance could have been better, the strength of the characters and the engaging plot made it a novel that I would recommend.
