"Blazing Armour" plunges you into a world of arson, mystery, and unexpected romance. As part of the popular 188 series, I was curious to see how this novel would stack up, and I found myself thoroughly entertained. While it has its share of angst, I think it's a standout in the series and a good entry point for new readers.

First Impressions

The initial meeting between firefighter Ren Yi and police officer Gong Yingxian is hilarious, setting the stage for their complicated relationship. I enjoyed how their forced cooperation quickly evolved into respect and then blossomed into something more. The author does a great job of creating a believable dynamic between these two very different men.

What Works Well

The plot is a major strength. The arson cases are intriguing, and I appreciated how they gradually revealed a larger conspiracy. The pacing kept me engaged, and the climax was well-executed. I also found myself learning a lot about firefighting and police work – the author clearly did their research! I also appreciated the equal footing and realistic relationship troubles with subsequent development between the main characters.

While I loved the action, I can see how some readers might find it overwhelming at times. The MC does have a bit of a "hero complex," which leads him to make some questionable decisions. I also felt that the resolution of the overarching mystery could have been executed better, the mastermind reveal felt somewhat underwhelming.
