My Thoughts on Beastmaster of the Ages
"Beastmaster of the Ages" is a web novel that caught my eye with its blend of xuanhuan, action, and comedy, promising a unique cultivation journey. I dove in eager to see how it would deliver on this intriguing premise. While it certainly has its moments, my overall experience was a mixed bag.
First Impressions
The setup is classic: a protagonist, Li Tianming, starts off in a tough spot, betrayed and underestimated. He has a poisoned mother, and a complicated family situation, but what immediately grabbed me was the concept of lifebound beasts. The idea of cultivating alongside these companions, each with unique abilities, felt fresh. However, it quickly became apparent that the story relies heavily on familiar tropes.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects, for me, was the humor, particularly the interactions between Li Tianming and his first companion beast, a cheeky phoenix chick. The comedic timing and banter provided genuine laugh-out-loud moments and helped to balance out some of the more serious plot elements. I found the early arcs enjoyable, with a satisfying revenge plot and a fast-paced progression system. The cultivation system, centered around beast companions, is also interesting and makes sense within the world.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the novel suffers from some significant drawbacks. The characters, aside from the MC and his pets, often feel one-dimensional and overly antagonistic. The constant face-slapping and revenge cycles can become repetitive and tiresome. I also found the battles to be somewhat lacking in depth, often described in a simplistic, almost formulaic way. The pacing, while initially engaging, can feel rushed, hindering world-building and character development. The romance also feels inorganic, and the female lead seems to only exist as a power-up for the MC.
Final Verdict
"Beastmaster of the Ages" has potential, and its early chapters offer a fun and engaging experience. However, the reliance on clichés, shallow character development, and repetitive plot structures ultimately hold it back. If you're looking for a lighthearted read with plenty of action and humor, it might be worth a try, but be prepared for a bumpy ride. I'd give it a cautious recommendation, leaning towards a 3/5.
