Description

First Impressions
The premise of this light novel grabbed my attention immediately. The idea of a protagonist, Fey, completely misunderstanding his role in a dark fantasy world and believing himself to be the shonen hero, while simultaneously mistaking the actual hero for a side character, is hilarious. It's a unique twist on the reincarnation trope, and I was eager to see how it played out.
What Works Well
The comedy is definitely a strong point. The contrast between Fey's self-imposed "heroic" persona and his actual thoughts creates a lot of funny moments. His constant misinterpretations of the world around him, based on his limited knowledge of game plots and shonen anime tropes, is pure gold. I found myself chuckling at his interactions with the characters, especially his teacher, whose romantic advances he sees as some kind of bizarre training method.
I also appreciate the unique harem dynamics. Each girl has her own distinct personality and motivations, which I find refreshing. The author seems to be playing with genre conventions in a clever way, subverting expectations and creating unexpected outcomes. I also enjoyed the behind-the-scenes glimpses of the gods livesteaming Fey's adventures and commenting on them in a 4chan-like manner.
Areas of Concern
While the overall concept is great, the translation quality seems to be a recurring issue. Inconsistencies in terminology and pronoun usage can be distracting and detract from the reading experience. Also, the age gap between some of the characters might be a turn-off for some readers, although the author has tried to balance it out by giving the girls more developed personalities and motivations.
