Description
This is a world of totems. People believe that power is derived naturally from all of nature: fire, earth, numemon, wolves and the Twelve-Winged Golden-Eyed Dragon King. Even going so far as saying that humans themselves… as long as they are naturally formed can communicate with this power and summon it as their own “faith totem”. Jiang Nan, an anatomy professor on earth, the kind of unfortunate man who doesn’t even deserve to find a woman in his life, has come to this world.

My Thoughts on Totem
"Totem" is definitely a unique web novel that I've had a chance to dive into, and it's left me with some mixed feelings. It’s a blend of action, adventure, comedy, and fantasy with a touch of the psychological, all wrapped up in a xuanhuan setting. The premise is intriguing, but the execution seems to be a bit of a rollercoaster.
First Impressions
Initially, I found myself a little disoriented. The story throws you into the life of a genius surgeon reincarnated as a slave in a world where his skills are considered a taboo. It's a jarring shift, and the early chapters can be difficult to get through. I will say, though, that it gets better as the story progresses.
What Works Well
What really stands out about "Totem" is its unconventional cast of characters. Each one seems to have their own quirks and, dare I say, mental instability, that makes them surprisingly compelling. The MC, despite his initial circumstances, is cunning and resourceful, using his knowledge of anatomy to his advantage. I particularly enjoyed the foreshadowing and the slow burn of the plot. It's not a typical power fantasy where the MC quickly rises to the top. Instead, he bides his time, honing his skills and waiting for the right opportunity. The world-building is also quite interesting, blending Western elements with a fantasy setting.
Areas of Concern
One of the biggest criticisms I see is the inconsistent character behavior. Some actions may seem incomprehensible, and the plot can feel a bit slow-paced. Also, the crude language and mannerisms of some characters may turn off some readers.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Totem" has a certain charm that kept me hooked. It's not a perfect novel, but it's a refreshing departure from the usual xianxia fare. If you're looking for something different with a flawed but intriguing cast of characters, "Totem" might be worth a try. I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
