I went into "This Emperor is Only An Actor" expecting a lighthearted romp through the showbiz world, and for the most part, that's exactly what I got. It's a fun, easy read that doesn't take itself too seriously, and I found myself chuckling along with the protagonist's antics.
First Impressions
The premise is definitely intriguing: a modern-day actor with a system that helps him excel in his roles, specifically when he's playing an emperor. The initial chapters grabbed my attention, and I was eager to see how the ML would navigate the challenges of the entertainment industry with his unique advantage. It definitely has the feel of a male-lead version of those showbiz dramas, which I find quite refreshing.
What Works Well
The comedy is definitely a strong point. The situations the ML finds himself in, and his reactions to them, are often genuinely funny. I appreciate the "calm protagonist" tag; he's not overly reactive or angsty, which makes him a pleasant character to follow. The power he has to change the script through a "virtual role-playing space" is pretty cool. I also like the "determined protagonist" aspect. Even with his system, he still appears to be working hard.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I did find some aspects a bit jarring. The ease with which the ML achieves success sometimes felt a little too convenient. It borders on wish fulfillment, and I would've preferred a bit more struggle and genuine effort on his part. I also found some of the female characters to be somewhat annoying. Their behavior sometimes felt unrealistic and detracted from my enjoyment of the story.
