I dove into "This Concubine Is No Ordinary Woman" with high hopes, drawn in by the promise of a strong female lead in a historical Chinese setting. The premise – transmigration, political intrigue, and romance – certainly piqued my interest. However, my experience ended up being a bit of a mixed bag.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were engaging enough. The world-building was decent, and I was curious to see how the female lead would navigate her new life as a concubine. The early interactions with the male lead, particularly the hinted-at "black belly" aspect, added a layer of intrigue.
What Works Well
The josei genre elements are definitely present, and the plot does manage to keep you somewhat invested. The author does a decent job of portraying the complexities of court life and the challenges faced by women in that era. Also, the fact that the female lead doesn't end up with the "scummy ex-husband" is a refreshing change from some of the more predictable historical romances. It's nice to see the FL move on and find happiness with someone new.
Areas of Concern
However, I struggled to fully connect with the characters, particularly the female lead. I found her decision-making to be questionable at times, leaving me frustrated. Additionally, the inconsistencies in the ex-husband's motivations were a bit jarring. It felt like the author struggled to create a truly compelling reason for his actions, which ultimately made him less believable as a character. The romance also felt somewhat lacking, and I didn't quite buy into the connection between the female lead and either of her husbands.

"This Concubine Is No Ordinary Woman" has its moments, and the fact that the female lead doesn't return to a toxic relationship is a definite plus. However, inconsistencies in character motivations, a somewhat unsatisfying romance, and a protagonist who sometimes lacks agency ultimately hold it back. I’d say it's a decent read if you're looking for a historical romance with a twist, but don't expect a masterpiece. I'd give it a solid 2.5/5 stars.
