Okay, the title alone grabbed me. The Wife Ran Away with the Master's Concubine? Sign me up! I went into this expecting some good old-fashioned drama, and I wasn't entirely disappointed. It’s a story set in ancient China with warring nations, political marriages, and a whole lot of scheming. Our female lead, You Yuji, is thrust into a terrible marriage, but she's no damsel in distress. Instead, she decides to make the best of a bad situation, which leads to some very interesting developments.
What Works Well
What I really enjoyed was the character of You Yuji. She's poised, intelligent, and incredibly strong. Even when her husband, Chen Anzhi, acts like a complete buffoon (and trust me, he does), she handles everything with grace. I also found the relationship between You Yuji and Si Que, the cross-dressing "concubine," to be the most compelling part of the story. Their connection is a slow burn, but it's genuinely touching and worth the wait. The author cleverly weaves together court intrigue, power plays, and romantic tension, making it a truly engaging read. The side characters are also richly written, adding depth to the overall narrative. Several readers have also praised the quality of translation, which is always a huge plus.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel, I did find some aspects a bit lacking. The world-building isn't particularly detailed, so if you're looking for a deeply immersive historical experience, you might be disappointed.
