Description
After three years and five months of togetherness, Jiang Kezhou and Ye Zheng called it quits. It’s easy to say “break up,” but it’s hard to erase the relationship. To the outside world, Jiang Kezhou is still the chairman’s wife, second sister-in-law, younger sister-in-law, and “the tigress of the master’s house.” But to Jiang Kezhou, he’s just a single man who’s trying to move on with his life. It’s like he’s been demoted from CEO to assistant, and everyone still thinks he’s in charge. It’s a little embarrassing.

My Thoughts on The Transition Period of a Break-up
"The Transition Period of a Break-up" is a complex yaoi novel that I found myself both intrigued and frustrated by. It's a story about ex-lovers, contracts, and the messy aftermath of a relationship built on unequal footing. While it has moments of sweetness and explores some interesting themes, it ultimately left me feeling a bit conflicted.
First Impressions
Going in, I was expecting a heavy angst-fest, given the title. However, I was relieved to find that while there's definitely pain and some bittersweet moments, it wasn't overwhelmingly angsty. The premise is certainly…unique. The MC is essentially "bought" by the ML to settle his father's debts, leading to a contracted kept-lover relationship. It's a dark start, to be sure, and sets the stage for the power imbalance that permeates much of the story.
What Works Well
I appreciated the MC's clear-headedness and self-respect. He's not overly emotional, and he understands his position in the relationship (or lack thereof) with the ML. I also enjoyed the exploration of how difficult it is to transition from a contract-based arrangement to a genuine, loving relationship. The author delves into the trust issues and insecurities that arise, especially considering the MC's difficult past. The audio drama adaptation seems to be a hit, too!
Areas of Concern
The plot can feel confusing at times, jumping between scenes without a clear foundation. Some plot points were resolved abruptly. I also found the ML's behavior after the "break-up" problematic. His jealous and entitled attitude, questioning the MC's actions, felt hypocritical, especially given his own past.

Final Verdict
"The Transition Period of a Break-up" is a flawed but ultimately engaging novel. While the plot can be confusing and the ML's behavior is questionable at times, the exploration of the characters' emotional journeys is compelling. I'd recommend it with reservations, particularly if you're a fan of the tropes and themes it explores. Just be prepared for some morally ambiguous situations and a somewhat uneven narrative.
