"The Ten Heroines are Insane!" is a wild ride of a novel that I found myself surprisingly enjoying. It’s definitely not high literature, but it delivers on its promise of chaotic harem antics and a protagonist trying to atone for his past lives. The premise alone – a protagonist stuck in a loop of reincarnations where he's the villain, now tasked with winning back the affections of ten ex-lovers who remember everything – is enough to pique anyone's interest.

First Impressions

Initially, I wasn’t entirely sold. The first few chapters felt a bit repetitive. There was a lot of telling instead of showing when it came to character motivations, especially with one of the heroines, whose intense love-hate relationship was hammered home a little too frequently. But, I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did.

What Works Well

The protagonist, Xu Ze, is surprisingly likeable. He's not a paragon of virtue, far from it, but he’s genuinely trying to make amends for his past actions. His willingness to protect the heroines and even help those who wronged him in the past adds a layer of depth that I wasn’t expecting. The comedy is also well-executed, mostly stemming from the sheer absurdity of Xu Ze's situation and the interactions between the heroines. I found myself invested in seeing them work through their issues and form genuine bonds. I also appreciated the light touch with the system mechanics. It's there, but it doesn't overwhelm the story with stats and redundant information.

While the main heroines receive a fair amount of attention, some of the supporting characters and even a few of the heroines themselves, feel a bit underdeveloped. They can come across as one-dimensional, lacking the depth and nuance of the more prominent characters. The author could benefit from working on "showing" rather than "telling" when it comes to character development, especially early on in the story.
