Description

"The Rise of Ning" is definitely a wild ride, a historical drama with romance and supernatural elements woven throughout. First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the rich setting of ancient China and the promise of complex family relationships. The tags suggesting arranged marriage and court intrigue definitely piqued my interest, and I was ready to dive into a world of scheming and ambition. I wasn't disappointed on that front.
What Works Well
The side characters really shine in this novel. Ning's stepmother and adoptive sister were particularly compelling. They added layers of nuance and unexpected twists to the story. The author clearly put a lot of thought into crafting these individuals, giving them depth beyond their roles in Ning's life. I found myself just as invested in their arcs as I was in the main plot, which is a testament to the quality of their writing. Areas of Concern
I have to admit, Ning herself wasn't always my favorite character. While she's described as decisive, I often found her to be a bit passive, letting events unfold around her rather than actively shaping her destiny. This passivity was frustrating at times, especially when I felt she could have taken a more proactive approach. The male leads are also problematic. All of them have some pretty significant flaws, and their relationships with Ning are often complicated and, at times, even toxic.

Despite its flaws, "The Rise of Ning" is a captivating read. The compelling side characters, rich historical setting, and dramatic plot twists kept me hooked from beginning to end. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical dramas with a touch of romance and supernatural elements, just be prepared for some morally gray characters and a few moments that might make you want to throw your e-reader across the room.
