"The Returner" is a web novel that had a lot of potential, particularly with its premise of a protagonist returning to Earth after a millennium spent as a demon lord. However, my experience reading it was quite mixed, and I can see why the overall rating sits where it does.

First Impressions

Initially, I was intrigued. The idea of a powerful being struggling to readjust to normal life, especially after commanding armies and wielding immense power, seemed ripe for both action and comedy. The initial chapters did deliver on some of that promise, offering glimpses of the MC's past life contrasting with his present-day laziness.

What Works Well

The early comedic interactions, particularly the parody of returner tropes, were a definite high point for me. There were moments where the author cleverly subverted expectations, and the initial contrast between the MC's past and present was genuinely funny. I also appreciated the translator's work.

Areas of Concern

Unfortunately, the humor quickly became repetitive and, for me, grating. The "lazy protagonist" trope, while initially amusing, was pushed to the extreme, making the MC feel less like a nuanced character and more like a caricature. I found myself struggling with the MC's lack of motivation. After living for a thousand years, I'd expect a bit more depth and maturity.

Another significant issue was the consistency of the characters. The MC's family, especially his mother, became increasingly annoying. The constant berating and over-the-top antics felt forced and detracted from the overall story. The plot progression also felt slow, with far too much filler dialogue and repetitive inner monologues. Fights, when they occurred, were often glossed over, leaving me wanting more.

I can't wholeheartedly recommend it, but if you're looking for a lighthearted comedy with minimal plot, it might be worth a try. However, be prepared for the humor to wear thin and the MC's antics to become tiresome.
